Pomegranate Square

Pomegranate Square

Ellen Miller's sketchbooks include a number of pomegranate studies. From these drawings she created a series of Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework compositions. This study in brown, plum and teal is one example. The table square is comprised of a harmonious arrangement of mirrored quadrants. A relatively sparse, offset square at the embroidery's center is pleasingly balanced by its corners which feature appliqued shapes of plum-colored fabric and a variety of subtle earth-toned stitches forming pomegranates. The design of this work, in addition to its use of natural materials and its hand-crafted production would have appealed to consumers in search of craft objects which resonated with the Arts and Crafts aesthetic and lived up to Arts and Crafts ideals.
