Over the Bounding Waves

Over the Bounding Waves

Ellen Miller likely created this design following a trip to California in 1909. A series of abstracted waves and flying fish coalesce into a centralized horizontal band of shape, texture and color. Floating on an otherwise insistently-flat field, the wave pattern draws the eye in one direction and three flying fish lead the eye in the other. The work owes a debt to Japanese ukiyo-e prints in terms of its subject matter, color scheme and the manner in which natural elements have been stylized and arranged into an artful composition.
