The Unicorn

A lone unicorn springs across a secluded glen in what is believed to be the final work of Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework co-founder, Margaret Whiting. Protected and framed by stately pine trees in the fore- and backgrounds, the illumined clearing is further defined by a series of overlapping hills appliqued in varying shades of green linen. The needlework's stylized and carefully arranged woodland motifs foster the sense of emanating quiet. The Society's designers, M. Whiting and Ellen Miller, were masters at combining nature with artifice, often, as we see here, by merging asymmetrical detail into an overall balanced composition. Although unfinished and therefore devoid of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework's seal, this appliqued and embroidered panel is representative of the Society's later designs.
