Together, Ellen Miller and Margaret Whiting attended classes at New York City's Art Students' League in the 1880s. Following art school, they co-wrote and co-illustrated the botanical field guide, Wild Flowers of the North Eastern States, published in 1895. This early collaboration would, not only have increased the artists' ability to identify New England flowers and to visualize their structures, it would, further, have given them a better understanding of the natural origins of the fanciful blooms present in the Colonial embroideries which they studied and sketched in and around Deerfield.
