Little Brown House, by an unknown photographer, 1890-1930.

Purchased by Annie Putnam in 1890, The Little Brown House became the studio which she shared with Madeline Yale Wynne. The women decorated the space with their paintings, and created and displayed their jewelry, and enamels here until 1915. Built in 1785 and originally owned by the Hitchcock family, as part of their renovation Putnam and Wynne inscribed in Latin the Hitchcock family motto 'To Be What I Desire' over the fireplace manteltree of their one-room studio.
