In Their Words

Visiting Lucy Henry's shop

Read Aloud

Mrs. Henry, with the help of other workers has prepared a goodly, snowy-white exhibit that soothes the eye of the way worn traveler by its absence of color. On beautiful white bedspreads the design is done in tufted clusters, or knotted in an ingenious fashion which requires time and patience, but which has a satisfactory firmness and permanency. The fringes of these spreads rival the real blossoms in their feathery lightness, which is seen in its perfection in the bed testers. Mrs. Henry has a technical vocabulary that is worth listening to as one handles and approves of curtain, table cover or mat, and she will give the histories of certain designs or fragments of design from which she has selected whatever she needs. One may choose the matrimony figure or even the double matrimony if so inclined, and find in its intricacies the symbol of the knotted felicities and infelicities of the matrimonial lot. The netting is beautifully done and the fabric on which the designs are tufted or knotted is not unlike the old dimity.
