In Their Words

Ellen Miller's Visions

Read Aloud

Margaret...certainly is the head and front of the Blue and White. She knows the theory and art of decoration as no one else in this region— except Ellen Miller does-Ellen rather has charge of the designing lately and is doing beautiful things too. There is no end to her fancies. She sees things in the night when she lies awake, and puts them down with the blue pencil next day.

Mary E. Allen letter to Frances Benjamin Johnston, Washington, DC, April 9, 1897. Library of Congress, FBJC, Reel 4.

Photographer and Mary Allen speaks here about individual strengths of the two principal founders of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework Margaret Whiting and Ellen Miller.
