Pomegranate Square

Pomegranate Square

© Memorial Hall Museum, Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association

Ellen Miller's sketchbooks reveal how she experimented with arranging individual and groups of pomegranates into harmonious Arts and Crafts designs. This table square was one of a number of embroideries that resulted from those visual exercises. Here, the four similar quadrants of her larger design have been oriented so that a trio of stylized pomegranates nestles into each corner of the work. Miller's design is nearly symmetrical along its vertical and horizontal mid-lines and her subtle balancing of light and dark elements adds to the harmony of the whole. This embroidery's hand craftsmanship, its natural materials and natural motifs would have appealed to the Arts and Crafts consumer.
