The Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework table square Grape Arbor offers an opportunity to consider the aesthetic concerns that Deerfield artisans shared with the international Arts and Crafts movement. Like many two-dimensional Arts and Crafts compositions, the design of the Grape Arbor places a strong emphasis on symmetry and the mirroring of elements along horizontal, vertical and diagonal mid-lines. The embroidery further aligns itself with Arts and Crafts work in its use of natural materials and natural motifs. Arts and Crafts movement artisans and proponents sought to elevate the useful objects of daily life into the realm of fine art.
