Blue Covered Jars

Blue Covered Jars

© Memorial Hall Museum, Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association

Embedded within the organic lines of these roughly-geometric covered red earthenware jars, by Chauncey Thomas' Deerfield pupil Ellen S. Birks, is a record of the moment at which they were created. The energy of each work's surface in combination with coats of deep blue and green glazes complete its decoration. In keeping with the Arts and Crafts call for work of honest intent, these vessels are precisely what they purport to be, small hand-built and hand-glazed covered red earthenware jars.
