Wool Rug

Prior to the First World War, Eleanor Arms wove hand-dyed and homespun wool yarn, purchased from the Women's Christian Temperance Union Settlement School in Hindman, Kentucky, into couch covers, rugs and blankets with Navajo-inspired designs. The artisan found particular pleasure in the color combinations she worked to achieve through her weaving. Her nephew remembered that, "sometimes on discovering an inharmonious strand half or more of a rug in the making would be unraveled, the strand changed and the 'picture' rewoven."¹
