This earth-toned table mat, with its wide band of mottled hues bordered on top and bottom by thinner bands of solid color, was created by the Deerfield Rug Maker Ella J. Hawks. As was true of the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework and the town's two basket making groups, the Deerfield Rug Makers were known for using materials that had been hand-colored with natural dyes. Although prior to 1903 the designer of a Deerfield Rug would typically send prepared materials and instructions to one of the town's weavers for assembly, this mat was woven by Hawks.
