"In pleasant, restful tones much of this work would please even a Japanese eye."1 So the work of the Deerfield Rug Makers was characterized by Sylvester Baxter in the journal Handicraft in 1902. Certainly the above description is true of this dusty-hued table mat woven by Deerfield Rug Makers member Ella J. Hawks. Hawk's harmonious shades of soft lavender, rose and green are woven into an agreeable unified whole. The Deerfield Rug Makers created pieces as small as this table mat and as large as a portieres, or door coverings.
