Crafts Barn

Group Exhibit Space: 1903-1907, 1911

In the summer of 1902 the membership of the Deerfield Society of Arts and Crafts decided to expand its summer exhibition space by taking advantage of an offer made by the Society's president, Madeline Yale Wynne. She proposed that, once renovated, a barn owned by her and Annie Putnam located behind their studio on Albany Road would suit the purpose. She and Annie Putnam each contributed $100 toward the needed repairs. Ellen Miller and Margaret Whiting who ran the Deerfield Society of Blue and White Needlework each added $100 to the effort. A final $100 was contributed by the membership of the Deerfield Society of Arts and Crafts. Madeline Yale Wynne and Annie Putnam's 'Crafts Barn' was annually used to show special exhibitions and the work of the Deerfield Arts and Crafts artisans from 1903 through 1907.

During the summer exhibition in 1905, for instance, Emma Henry, Luanna Thorn, Edwin Thorn, the Blue and White Society, Madeline Yale Wynne, Annie Putnam, the Allen Sisters, and Deerfield's rug makers and the basket makers all showed their work in the Crafts Barn.
